Vertical vs horizontal cat scratchers
Let your cat’s scratching posture choose the shape
The best scratcher is the one that stays still, sits in the right location and lets your cat use its preferred full-body movement.
Choose vertical for a full upward stretch
A vertical post should be tall enough for the cat to extend fully and heavy enough not to wobble. Place it beside the furniture or doorway the cat already scratches rather than hiding it in an unused corner.
Choose horizontal for floor-level scratching
Flat cardboard, sisal or fabric scratchers suit cats that work their claws with a low back and extended front legs. A wide base prevents the pad from sliding across hard floors.
Angled designs can bridge both preferences
Inclined scratchers offer a different wrist and shoulder position and can be useful when a cat ignores a straight post. They still need a non-slip base.
Material and placement matter as much as shape
Offer two textures initially and note what the cat returns to. Position scratchers near sleep areas, room entrances and existing scratch marks, then reward use without forcing the paws onto the surface.
