Natural cat enrichment
Natural enrichment for indoor cats: a practical rotation
Mix hunting, scratching, climbing, chewing, grazing and watching instead of leaving every toy on the floor all week.
Build a weekly rotation
Keep two or three safe toys available and rotate the rest. Wool balls support quiet chase, kicker toys invite wrestling, and a puzzle feeder adds a food-motivated challenge.
Bring the outdoors to a secure window
A stable perch and hygienically maintained window bird feeder create visual enrichment. Keep the cat indoors and unable to reach wildlife.
Choose materials thoughtfully
Natural does not mean indestructible. Inspect wool, rope, cardboard and silvervine for loose fibres or small fragments and retire worn toys early.
Make scratching easy to choose
Offer vertical and horizontal surfaces near sleep areas and existing scratch locations. A post should allow a full stretch without wobbling.
