Cat fountains for hard water

Hard water makes cleanable design more important than extra features

Mineral scale can collect around pumps, seams and drinking surfaces. A fountain that comes apart easily is usually easier to live with than one whose motor is difficult to reach.

Prefer accessible water paths

Look for a removable pump, open reservoir and few narrow channels. Stainless steel and glazed ceramic drinking surfaces can be straightforward to wipe, but plastic pump housings still need descaling.

Filters do not solve every mineral problem

Standard carbon filters mainly address taste, odour and debris. Do not assume they soften hard water unless the manufacturer specifically describes that function.

Build cleaning into the buying decision

Check the instructions for safe descaling, dishwasher-compatible parts and pump disassembly. Rinse thoroughly after any approved cleaning solution and replace worn impellers or filters as directed.

Watch the water level

Evaporation concentrates minerals and a low level can make the pump noisy. Top up with fresh water, complete full water changes and keep a separate bowl available while cleaning.
